Contemporary Art Market Conversation @ Sotheby’s: Mr Brainwash
On November 8th, the week before the second round of Fall Post-War and Contemporary art auctions, Sotheby’s New York and the Economist.Com hosted a panel to discuss the state of the art market. The forum took a look at the innovations and methods being used by contemporary artists working today, and their relationship with the auction market.
The deputy editor for the Economist.Com, Gideon Lichfield, served as the moderator to the panel of distinguished art world aficionados. The panel concentrated on street artist Mr Brainwash, and former editior of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, special correspondent for Vanity Fair, and author of the Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up, Bob Colacello .
Collectively the group explored the various tends among contemporary artists, galleries, and dealers and the means by which they effect the market. The ways in which artists influence their markets and work to build auction recognition was a key topic.
