Dan Colen: Candle Painting

Dan Colen: Candle Painting Inspection

“So Long” by Dan Colen comes from the artist’s series coined the candle paintings. The series consists of paintings of the same image from the Disney book “The Adventures of Pinocchio”. These works are painted from various editions of the book; after dirtying his first copy of the book and having to order a second, Colen found that each printing of the book rendered the image of Geppeto’s work table differently. This body of works grew as an observation of the pictorial variations amongst versions of the same story. In a 2010 interview Dan Colen described this particular scene, the desk at which Geppeto created Pinocchio , as a “picture of creation…the beginning of everything”. The works explore the biblical subtext of the image of Geppeto’s desk. This particular example from Dan Colen’s candle series, “So Long”, is one of only 13 to exist and currently on view at Sotheby’s in New York. This work, and others, are featured in the auction house’s inaugural “Selling Exhibition”.

This is a rare opportunity to view one of these paintings by Dan Colen in person, so if you have a chance make your way over to Sotheby’s NYC – this piece and others by Dan Colen will be on view starting October 27th, 2011. (More details on the exhibition HERE)
