Fall Auction Report: Banksy @ Upcoming Sotheby’s London Sales
The conclusion of Summer and the arrival of Fall marks the start of the Contemporary Art auction calendar. As per tradition the season kicks-off in London, which is reflected in the concentration on UK based artists. British street art is best represented this go around at the Sotheby’s Evening and Day sales with works by the Queen’s “favorite” graffitist, Banksy.
Sotheby’s will offer 4 canvases by Banksy in their October 15th/16th program. The star of these lots is a stunning Oil on Canvas entitled Pledge Allegiance to the Flag to be featured in the evening line-up along side works by fellow British art world superstars like Lucian Freud (set the record in ’08 for the highest price paid for an artwork by a living artist), Gilbert & George, as well as Tim Noble and Sue Webster.
This is not to say that Street Art is not being represented in the other sales. Christie’s has perhaps the most interesting Banksy in London this Fall. Both the artworks medium and the story behind its participation in the sale sets it apart from the rest. The work is being described as “spray enamel on found aluminum sign”. The inclusion of “found” to the description heightens the works affiliation with urban/street art, as needless to say the winning bidder will be going home with a Banksy’ied STOP sign (pictured above). The piece has been consigned to Christie’s by Banksy himself, with the proceeds intended as a donation to the Defenestration Fund in San Francisco, CA. The money will go towards the restoration and preservation of the historic art space that has served as a platform for public art for the last 13 years. For details on the plan to save the Defenestration and to learn how you can help – CLICK HERE.
The work itself resonates with a sense of immediacy, a cry for help – as embodied in the image of the calling blackbird.
The pre-auction estimates on all of the works by Banksy are quite strong with the average low estimates prices starting at 40,000.USD (Prices below are listed in GBP). Banksy has a terrific sales record and with the level of quality in these work and the present relevance of street art, he will only continue to amaze.
