Mr Brainwash continues to employ 1970’s British punk rockers the Sex Pistols in his most recent edition, My First Concert. The urban art movement and the MBW’s own work identifies with the anti-establishment ethos the band has come to define. Aside from their loud and aggressive sounds, the Sex Pistols are recognized for the cultural impact their music had on both Rock’n’Roll and Britain (and beyond). In a 2001 article Rolling Stone Magazine described their legacy as having come “to spark and personify one of the few truly critical movements in pop culture – the rise of punk.” It this sense of influence and radical persona that seems to attract MBW to the band in his art, as seen in earlier works like his portraits of Sid Vicious and his ’09 Anarchy in the UK.
Urban Art is a movement of liberation, of empowerment that breaks from tradition and truly operates outside of the box – and consequently finds parallel to the Sex Pistols by Mr Brainwash. Just as their music inspired, so can art.
