Shepard Fairey: OBEY EYE Editions

OBEY EYE EDITIONS

Obey Eye has always been a favorite Fairey work of the Collective. Over the last year or so we have bought and sold 15-20 works from the edition and have received a great deal of interest. Aside from the well know edition of 450 signed and numbered we wanted to highlight a smaller version of the work Fairey produced in collaboration with the 51st issue of Arktip Magazine. The work was released in an edition of 500 unnumbered but signed and measures a magazine appropriate size of 7.5 x 10 inches. Details on the work below,

-Shepard Fairey on the edition:

I have known Scott, the creator of Arkitip for ten years when he was on issue 2. I was in issue 3 and I later contributed writing to a few other issues. The magazine started off only black and white, but has evolved into a very beautiful and sophisticated publication. I am very proud to be the featured artist in Arkitip 51. The issue includes current exclusive content from my indoor and outdoor work for the Boston ICA as well as a large selection of my newest fine art. There is an extensive interview with me by Simon Steinhardt and a great essay by ICA curator Pedro Alonzo. The magazine is packaged in a premium box with hand placed stickers on the outside. The magazine itself is perfect bound and has a die-cut cover. There is also a magazine sized, one color signed and numbered version of the Obey Eyeball print. The run is limited to 5,000.

-ARKTIP Magazine on the edition:

Shepard Fairey is arguably the most famous artist of the Arkitip alumni group, and could quite possibly be the artist most remembered of his generation. We celebrate Shepard’s methods not only because they are beautiful and effective but also because he took on the mainstream art establishment and after 20 long years, he seems to be winning.

His recent rise to popularity punctuated by his support of the Obama Presidential campaign has made Shepard Fairey a household name. His iconic portrait of Barack Obama has come to symbolize the historic campaign of the first African American to be elected President and now that image graces the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. He’s an artist who stands by what he believes in and has done more to communicate his causes to the masses than most of his contemporaries, which is admirable on any level. His campaigns have done more to shape the public consciousness than any other artist because you don’t have go to a gallery to see his work, its ubiquity is well established.

This issue will be truly historic, as we celebrate 20 Years of Shepard’s seminal ‘Obey’ campaign. Because Shepard has not been a guest of Arkitip magazine since issue edition No. 0003, this reunion collaboration has been long overdue and is a guaranteed to be another groundbreaking Arkitip classic.
