SHEPARD FAIREY MAKES AN APPEARANCE ON COMEDY CENTRAL’S “COLBERT REPORT”

Stephen Colbert the host of Comedy Centrals television show the “Colbert Report” featured artists Frank Stella, Carl Andre, and Shepard Fairey on his most recent episode. Art was incorporated into the show by Steve Martin who was promoting his new book that details his excapades in the artworld as an enthusiasts and collector. Steve Martin has his art knowledge put to the test, ending in an eventual appraisal of a portrait of Colbert. Guest artist Shepard Fairey appears following Stella who declared the portrait a work of art. Shepard Fairey goes to work on the portait, putting his OBEY mark on it. He describes his alteration of the piece as bringing the forefront the nature of Stephen Colbert’s political satire. The episode shows Shepard Fairey in action, working on the piece with spray paint and stencils in hand. Shepard Fairey’s appearance on the episode details his role in art as both an artist and activist, using his artworks to raise attention and dissect the truth. With the help of Shepard Fairey the episode explores the factors that define art and the value of art, using Steve Martin as the platform for exploration and Colbert’s humor as the commentator.
