Shepard Fairey: Steven Colbert x Shepard Fairey Art Sells

Starting off Art Auction House Phillips de Pury’s UNDER THE INFLUENCE Sale was the Stephen Colbert x Shepard Fairey x Andres Serrano x Frank Stella collaboration. This piece created during an episode of Stephen Colbert’s Comedy Central television show the Colbert Report, was the result of Shepard Fairey and others making additions to a portrait of Colbert. “Portrait 5, Stephen(s)” an inkjet on canvas with acryclic spray paint (from Shepard Fairey), sharpie (from Andres Serrano) is the product of these artists working together – the piece was verified by Frank Stella as art.

The work sold at the Phillips de Pury Under the Influence auction on March 8th, 2010 for $26,000.USD with all of the proceeds going to benefit Donorschoose.org. Stephen Colbert conducted the auctioneering rallying bids from the audience with statements like, “If you’re not raising your paddle it means you hate children.” Colbert encouraged bidding with promises to hang the artwork himself in the winning bidder’s home as well as invite the winner onto his television program. Colbert ended to bidding by offerring to take off his shirt if anyone could produce Mardi Gras beads and throw them his way.

Shepard Fairey continues to work to produce charitable awareness, as seen in this unique approach.
