Space Invader: Space Invader Arrested
The mass celebration street art has been receiving as of late with the opening of the MOCA exhibition “Art is the Streets”, the eyes of the art world have been all over the works of artist like Space Invader, but the police have been watching as well. According to a report from the LA Time ones April 20th the Los Angeles Police detained to French citizens, one of which believed to be Space Invader, on chargers of vandalism. They were detained after authorities reportedly caught them with buckets of grout and pieces of tile near the historic Perez building in Little Tokyo.
Jack Richter, an LAPD senior lead officer, said authorities believe that one of those detained was Space Invader, who has left mosaic tiles of the vintage video game of the same name in cities around the world. Space Invader has since been released.
Street art continues to challenge the gray divide between high art and the illegal, however shows like “Art is the Streets” @ MOCA help to secure graffiti as a significant piece of art history.
